Facebook Deals in Canada

Facebook already offers deals through its Facebook Places service. Now they are offering them in Canada.

Here is a good post by Brian Jackson from ITbusiness.ca on the subject.

“Canadian consumers now have access to digital coupons via Facebook on their touch screen smartphones. But not all businesses can yet create a deal through the social network – Facebook is first conducting a beta program with 11 retail partners, all of them national brands.”

Our comment:

Offering merchants the chance to post their own deals on Facebook for free is great for merchants, (merchants will not have to share sales commissions with Facebook). However, unless Facebook provides a way for its audience to search for deals by city, by category or by interest, then this services will not be as powerful as the typical Daily Deal service (Groupon, Living Social). If they do not provide this service, then audiences will have to go to each merchants Facebook age to see deals….and that is just nonsense. As such, we are assuming that Facebook will indeed provide some mechanism for its audience to search and categorize these deals by local region. If so, then this will certainly and instantly ensure Facebook as a leader in the Daily Deal space.
