Rakuten acquires eBates for $1 Billion

Rakuten acquires eBates for $1 Billion

Rakuten continues to strategically acquire companies in the affiliate marketing, deals/coupons sector  and consumer internet sectors in order to render it indispensable to consumers.  The company has just announced the purchase of online shopping coupon and cash back site  Ebates.com for $1 billion.

In an announcement Tuesday, Rakuten stated that it will hold 100 percent of Ebates outstanding voting stock.

Last year, shoppers spent $2.2 billion through the Ebates.com website.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Rakuten’s CEO said the “very important strategic acquisition” of Ebates will help the firm expand beyond its main customer base in Tokyo, Japan. The Japanese online retail giant hopes that access to Ebates’ 2.5 million customers will help the firm tap into US markets.

Rakuten also owns Linkshare, one the the top Affiliate Networks. The combination of Linkshare and eBates is a rather powerful proposition. Look for further growth in Ebates as Rakuten funnels its advertiser network, its affiliate network and consumer network to leveraging the eBates service.

In terms of Canada, look for Ebates Canada to become even stronger as the Canadian team also starts to leverage Rakuten’s and Linkshare’s advertising network.
