Adobe Firefly — Commercially Safe AI Images Built Into Creative Cloud

Adobe Firefly's core differentiator is commercial licensing. Every image it generates is cleared for commercial use. No copyright headaches, no restrictions on publishing. Here is what that is worth and what it costs in Canada.

What Adobe Firefly Is

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's AI image and video generation tool. It is built directly into Creative Cloud — Photoshop, Illustrator, and Express all include Firefly-powered features. You can also use it standalone at firefly.adobe.com.

The key fact about Firefly is commercial licensing. Adobe trained it exclusively on licensed Adobe Stock images and public domain content. Every image Firefly generates is commercially safe by default. You can use the output in advertising, on product packaging, in client deliverables — without legal exposure from training data disputes.

This is the meaningful differentiator. Midjourney and DALL-E produce better images in many cases. Firefly produces commercially licensed images. For agencies and brands, that distinction matters.

Creative Cloud includes 4,000 Firefly credits/month — If you subscribe to Creative Cloud All Apps (~$84.99 CAD/month for individuals, or your organisation's plan), Firefly is already included. You do not need a standalone Firefly plan. Use the credits included in your existing plan before paying for a separate subscription.

Standalone Firefly Pricing in CAD

If you do not have Creative Cloud and only need AI image generation, the standalone plans are a much more affordable entry point.

Image Quality: Honest Assessment

Firefly's image quality is good, not best-in-class. For photorealistic and highly stylized output, Midjourney still produces stronger results. Firefly's strength is consistency and integration — the output fits cleanly into Adobe workflows, and the Photoshop generative fill and generative expand features are genuinely excellent for production editing.

The Firefly-powered features inside Photoshop are more useful day-to-day than the standalone generator for most designers. Generative fill (replacing or extending parts of an existing image) and text-to-image inside an active Photoshop session are where Firefly's practical value concentrates.

Best For / Watch Out

Best for: Teams already in the Adobe ecosystem. Agencies and brands with commercial licensing requirements. Anyone using Photoshop or Illustrator who wants AI generation without switching tools.

Watch out: Image quality falls behind Midjourney for creative and photorealistic work. Best used as part of an Adobe workflow, not as a standalone Midjourney replacement. If you are not already a Creative Cloud subscriber, the standalone plan only makes sense for occasional commercial-use image needs.

Firefly vs Midjourney: Which to Choose

If your team runs on Creative Cloud, Firefly is the obvious choice — commercially safe, deeply integrated, already included in your plan. For standalone creative work where image quality is the only criterion and licensing is not a concern, Midjourney still produces better results.

Many teams use both: Midjourney for ideation and concept images, Firefly for final production assets that need commercial clearance.
