What Is Google Gemini?
Gemini is Google's AI assistant. You go to gemini.google.com, type a question or request, and it responds. Same idea as ChatGPT. Built by Google instead of OpenAI.
It replaced Google Bard in 2024. The name changed because the underlying model — Gemini — is significantly more capable than what Bard ran on.
Available in Canada in English and French. No VPN required. No waitlist.
Free vs Paid
The free tier is genuinely useful. Gemini 2.0 Flash handles most everyday tasks — writing, Q&A, translation, coding help — without hitting a wall.
The paid plan ($27.99 CAD/month) adds Gemini 2.5 Pro, which is more capable on complex reasoning tasks. It also unlocks Gemini in Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets — which is the real reason most people pay.
Gemini in Google Search (AI Mode)
Google is integrating Gemini directly into Search. When you type certain questions into Google, you now see an "AI Overview" at the top — a Gemini-generated summary before the regular links.
Google is also testing a full "AI Mode" where the entire search experience is Gemini-powered, with follow-up questions and deeper research capabilities.
For Canadians: AI Overviews are live in Canada. Full AI Mode is still rolling out — some users see it, some don't.
Gemini AI Photo: What It Can Do with Images
Gemini can analyze images you upload. Show it a photo and ask questions about it. Show it a document and ask it to summarize.
It can also generate images using Google's Imagen 3 model. Type a description, it produces a photo-quality image. Available on both free and paid tiers (with some daily limits on the free tier).
The image generation is solid. Not as stylistically flexible as Midjourney, but accurate and fast for realistic images.
